Septic Systems

The Big Question:

"How often should I get my septic tank pumped?"

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection suggests pumping your tank at least every 3 to 5 years to help ensure it continues to work properly. If you have an alternative system with electrical/mechanical components, you should have service more frequently.

Over time your septic system becomes its own eco system. Containing living microorganisms that digest and treat household waste. Pouring any foreign substances down the drain can kill these organisms, causing harm to the septic system as a whole. No matter which sink or drain you use, avoid chemical and oils.

Major factors that determine how often to pump your septic system:

  • Household Size

  • Total Wastewater Generated

  • Volume of Solids in the Wastewater

  • Septic Tank Size

Signs it's past time to pump your tank:

  • Trouble flushing

  • Gurgling sounds in the drains

  • Sewage backup in the drains

  • Lawn has green spots - indicating sewage backup

  • Lawn has standing water spots around the system

  • Odors coming from the drains or toilets (septic gasses include: methane, carbon dioxide & nitrous oxide)

Drainfield

Your drainfield is a major component of your septic system that adds oxygen and removes contaminants from the liquid that emerges from your septic tank.

It's important to know a few things to keep your drainfield in good condition.

  • DO NOT park on your drainfield.

  • DO NOT plant trees or anything with a large root system as they can be root cause of drainfield going into failure.

  • Make sure gutters & sump pumps are facing away from your drainfield. Excess water can and will slow down or stop the wastewater treatment process.

Materials that go down the drain do not typically break down. This causes harm to the healthy bacteria that grow in your septic system and helps break down organic matter in the septic system. Not to leave out the harmful chemicals down your drain can impact your drinking water and the environment.

Tips to Help Avoid Issues with Your Septic System

  • Fix leaking pipes ASAP. Leaks can cause a minimum of 2,000 gallons per year.

  • Too much laundry in a short duration can cause an overload on your system.

  • Never drive on the system. This can collapses the drainfield and the tank.

  • Avoid poisoning your system contaminating the microorganisms and your drinking water.
